Joan Jonas

Born 1936 in New York. Lives and works in New York.

After studying art history and sculpture, Jonas became a pioneering female performer, striving to develop performances indoors and outdoors combining the use of mirrors, hand-props, drawings, and film. After The Juniper Tree (76), she developed story like performances and installations inspired by a variety of literature and myths, in doing so she was questioning the spectator as to body, gender, memory, and identity.
