Early on, Magritte was influenced by the Cubists and Futurists, but in 1923 he was deeply impressed by the
Metaphysical painting of Giorgio de Chirico, and aligned himself with the Surrealist movement. Magritte
at times pointed out the skewed relation between words and imagery in painting, and gained renown for
the scintillating wit of his work. Photographs by Magritte from between 1935 and 1943 from the Yokohama
Museum of Art collection will be presented during the Triennale.
