Yoshitomo Nara+
graf (Japan)
Yoshitomo Nara – Born in 1959 in Aomori, Japan. Lives
and works in Tokyo.
graf is a creative unit that examines structures for living
in its designs. graf is involved in space design as well as
furniture and lighting design, graphics, product design, art
and even food design. While its focus is on modern design, graf’s
designs represent a freedom unhindered by existing design. Its
diverse activities encompass not only product merchandising
but also shop design and art direction. Based in Osaka, graf
also has an office in London.
Yoshitomo Nara + graf’s project “A to Z” began
when graf built sheds in three sizes (small, medium and large)
in 2003. graf’s aim is to eventually bring together these
works or sheds that have been built in various locations and
to create an imaginary town. A feature of this town is that
the streets are named “A” to “Z”, as
if in a dictionary. “A to Z” also evokes the “A
to Z” street map of London. Nara has departed from the
conventional method of displaying works in which the artwork
is hung on a white wall. Instead, by exhibiting his work on
the wall of a shed that is in no way a white cube, Nara has
revived narrativity and the relationship between the work and
its environment - elements that have been slowly eroded by modernism
over the years.

Moataz Nasr (Egypt)
Born in 1961 in Alexandria, Egypt. Lives and works in Cairo.
Nasr first gained attention with the work that he submitted to the 8th
Cairo Biennale in 2001 and has since continued to participate in various
international exhibitions. Nasr’s radical work questions the culture
of his country which despite its independence from Britain remains affected
by the consequences of colonial control. He looks at the political and social
issues that have been triggered by that environment. His many recent and
major exhibitions include the São Paolo Biennale (2004), the Busan
Biennale (2004) and the Venice Biennale (2004).

Tazro Niscino (Japan)
Born in 1960 in Aichi, Japan. Lives and works in Cologne.
Niscino began creating his unique installations in 1997 after graduating
from the Academy of Art Münster (Germany). He specializes in large-scale
installations consisting of a private room created as part of a structure
specifically built to incorporate a public property. In recent years, Niscino’s
audacious installations have been attracting increasing acclaim in Europe.
The quality of his work is underpinned by an extraordinary sense of unpredictability
and a perfectionist’s attention to detail.
Major works include the Das habe ich gar zu gern project (Kuenstlerhaus Dortmund,
1999), Artothek (Cologne, 2000), Interventionen (Sprengel Museum, Hannover,
2001), Engel project (Littmann Kulturprojekt, Basel, 2002) and the Moon
Rider project (Dublin City Council, 2004).

Makoto Nomura+ Yukihiro Nomura (Japan) 
Composer Makoto Nomura (born in 1968 in Aichi, Japan. Lives
and works in Kyoto) creates various pieces for instruments
including keyboard harmonica, gamelan and piano. He formed
the keyboard harmonica orchestra “P-blot” in 1996
and has since held numerous workshops. Winner of the 1st Asahi
Beer Arts Prize. Participated in “Donaiyanen! Et maintenant!
– La creation contemporaine au Japon,” (L’école
Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, Paris, 1998) and
“Bricolage Art Now” (National Museum of Ethnology,
Osaka, 2005). Filmmaker Yukihiro Nomura (born in 1961 in Kyoto,
Japan. Lives and works in Gifu.) formed the artist collective
“Gensou Koubo” in 1994, and is involved in creative
activities based on collaborations with artists, sculptors,
composers and dancers. The work submitted to Yokohama 2005
will represent a collaboration between these two artists.
