Lives and works in Switzerland and Germany. Rist's video installations fuse music, images, and narrative to create an entirely new kind of video expression with vivid colors, theatrical settings, rhythmical editing, and expansive humor. Her works are a paean to the feminine qualities of a free, individualistic woman, affirming the kind of femininity that has been rejected by women themselves and acting as the visual expression of a new phase of feminist discourse. Rist is one of the most popular contemporary artists at work today. International exhibitions: Venice Biennale (young artist's prize), 1993 and 1997, Kwangju Biennale and Lyon Biennale, 1997, Istanbul Biennale, 1999. Solo shows at the Musee d'Art Modern de la Ville Paris and other museums. Exhibitions in Japan: "Dream of the Body," National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto and Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo, 1999.
