マッツ・イェルムの父親はブリティッシュ・テレビジョンのドキュメンタリー映画のカメラマンであり、彼が７歳の時に死去した。彼に残されたものは漠然とした父のイメージと、撮影された膨大なフィルムの山であった。イェルムはこのフィルムの山から映像を抽出して断片化し、再編集して自己の作品として提示する。この作業は父の記憶を再構成し自己同一性を回復する個人的な営みであるが、世界各地で撮影された膨大なフィルムの断片から編集される彼の映像コラージュは、私的であると同時に集合的な記憶として、ドキュメンタリー映像でありながら非現実的な、現実世界の歴史でありながら不在（ユートピア）の歴史イメージとして、奇妙な心理的宙吊り状態を生み出す。

Mats Hjelm's father was a documentary filmmaker
for British television who died when Hjelm was
7 years old. All that was left were only dim memories
of his father and a large heap of film and a vast
collection of documentary films. Mats uses those
films for his own artwork. He selects frames from
the films and edits them into a film collage made
up of fragments filmed across the world. They
are his personal memories and also our collective
memories. Mats uses images from documentary films
but when edited they look unreal. Although it
is a real history, it looks like a history of
utopia.
