パフォーマンスやビデオ、フィルム、写真、ビデオ・インスタレーションなど様々な媒体を用いて制作。身体の限界に挑戦する過激な行為とパフォーマンスをその中心に据えた一連のパフォーマンスでは、氷、火、体罰、オブジェなどを要素として取り入れ、彼女自身の様々な側面や、彼女と観客や社会との関係が探求の対象となっている。近作では様々な素材が有する精神的資質に関心をむけ、「癒し」や「瞑想」、「待つこと」などの状況に観客を積極的にとりこむ。1997年のヴェネチア・ビエンナーレでは骨を磨き続けるパフォーマンスを展開して、グランプリを受賞。越後妻有アートトリエンナーレ2000で制作した古い民家を改装した「夢の家」では現在も彼女の作品を宿泊して体験できる。
Born in Yugoslavia in 1946. Lives and works in
the Netherlands.
Abramovic does body performances and makes video,
film and photographic works and video installations.
In the performances, Abramovic pushes the boundaries
of physical potential using such elements as ice,
fire, corporal punishment and objects. What she
searches for are her own selves and her relationship
with viewers and with society. In her recent works,
Abramovic shows an interest in the spiritual quality
of various materials. The works are designed to
invite the viewers to participate in situations
like "healing," "meditation" and "waiting." In
1997, her performance of scrubbing animal bones
won the Golden Lion Award at the Venice Biennale.
In 2000, she turned an old house into an artwork
titled "Dream House" at the Echigo-Tsumari Art
Triennale, Japan. The house is still open to the
public and people can stay at the house. |
